Seasonal Release Artist Feature: Jansz Tasmania x Daniel Gray-Barnett

We are pleased to unveil our latest bespoke giftbox through collaboration with Tasmanian world-renowned illustrator Daniel Gray-Barnett. Each Year, we aim to brighten your festive season by bringing Tasmania to life on our packaging to produce our Jansz Tasmania Seasonal Release.

Daniel Gray-Barnett lives in the Huon Valley in Tasmania with his husband, german shorthaired pointers and chickens. Self-taught, he studied Medical Science at the University of Sydney before swapping his microscope for pencils when he realised illustration had a much lower patient mortality rate. Daniel has worked with global brands including Kiehl’s, Disney/ Pixar, The Big Issue, The Boston Globe, Coachella Festival, Sydney Opera House, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, The New York Times, Warner Music, Facebook, Penguin Random House.

The artwork featured on our Jansz Tasmania Giftbox, ‘Our Breath, Our Song’ is inspired by the majesty and mythology of the Bass Strait. The abstract work explores the flow of time, people and nature that shapes not only our Jansz Tasmania vineyards, but all the land around us. Undeniably Tasmanian, Unmistakably Jansz Tasmania.

To celebrate the upcoming release of this exciting collaboration, we asked Daniel a few questions about his experience creating this artwork.

Where did the inspiration for the name ‘Our Breath, Our Song’ come from?

“I chose a name that captured the sense of Tasmania and its environment being a living, breathing thing, and what story it might tell. It felt like it would be a song.”

What was your creative process – from where did you draw your inspiration and what mediums, and techniques did you use?

“I drew inspiration from the Tasmanian landscape and in particular, the Pipers River region where the Jansz Vineyard makes its home. The river seemed like a really fitting symbol to base the artwork around and tie in elements that make the area and Tasmania so special. I used a combination of analogue and digital techniques. My main tools are ink, charcoal and graphite as well as the computer to scan, layer and combine everything together once it’s been drawn.”

What inspired the colour palette for ‘Our Breath, Our Song’?

“The colours are inspired by the vines, the earth and the water of the landscape. Green is a dominant colour, symbolising creative energy and the strong connection to nature that encompasses so much of what Jansz and life in Tasmania is about.”

How would you describe the connection between the artwork and Tasmania?

“‘Our Breath, Our Song’ is about our changing relationship with Tasmania, its flora and fauna and the flow of air, water, time and people. I think it’s also unexpectedly vibrant - Tasmania is usually considered low-key and understated but is actually bursting with creativity and life.”

What is the personal connection you have to the piece?

“The piece represents a lot of what I love about living and creating in Tasmania and what drew me to Tasmania in the first place. There is a lifestyle here that values its connection to nature, community and sustainability. The history, the landscape and the people are full of stories and are a constant source of creative inspiration.”

What is your connection to our brand, why did you say yes to working with Jansz Tasmania?

“Jansz is such a uniquely iconic Tasmanian brand. Not only is it a favourite in our house, but it is a perfect representation of what I love about Tasmanian creativity - organic, an appreciation for craft and a respect for old ways. Tasmanians really value keeping these skills and knowledge alive - they may be ways of doing things that take longer and require patience, but in the end, result in a quality that is worthwhile. I have a love for mid-century illustration and traditional techniques and in the same way, though they may take longer and be more complex, I love to adopt these older methods into my work.”

Our Jansz Tasmania x Daniel Gray Barnett collaboration features our Premium Cuvée. With aromas of honeysuckle, citrus zest and fresh strawberries from the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir fruit, this is the perfect fizz to gift and enjoy this festive season!
